THE ROLE OF A NANNY/MANNY

Overview: 21st Century Nannies

The term nanny was first recorded in the Oxford Dictionary back in 1786, but like any new word added, we can only infer that it dates back even further.

In the 21 st century, the Nanny has evolved like many other roles within private residence, for example, a position once performed only by women has seen an influx of men over the years joining the profession – formally known as a Manny. They carry out exactly the same duties as their female counterpart and occasionally preferred by some families where the children are all boys and who may benefit from their unique perspective and approaches these Mannies can offer.

EVOLVING NANNY ROLES

As modern family dynamics have transformed, so too have the expectations placed on nannies with the integration of roles within domestic settings becoming increasingly popular. For example, the Nanny/Housekeeper position is advantageous for families with school-aged children, allowing for a dual focus on childcare and household management. Similarly, combinations such as Nanny/Governess, Nanny/Tutor, or Nanny/Personal Assistant have emerged, catering to specific educational and developmental needs.

NANNY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibility of a Nanny or Manny is to create a safe, nurturing environment where children can thrive. This involves a range of childcare duties, including:

– Ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of children
– Preparing them for the day (waking, washing, dressing)
– Making breakfast and packing school bags
– Escorting children to and from school
– Managing children’s laundry and maintaining their rooms
– Regularly cleaning toys
– Engaging in play-based learning with younger children
– Reading with children and encouraging literacy
– Planning and facilitating activities such as arts and crafts, museum visits, and playdates
– Overseeing homework and providing academic support
– Coordinating medical appointments and ensuring a balanced diet through meal preparation

SOLE & SHARED NANNY CHARGE

Often, nannies operate in sole charge roles, although some may share responsibilities with parents. In affluent households, it is not uncommon to find one nanny dedicated to each child, particularly if they have specialised skills for working with specific developmental stages vital for fostering cognitive, physical, social, and emotional growth. Where shared responsibility is required, excellent teamwork and communication skills, and knowing when to step-up and step-back is essential.

NANNY QUALIFICATIONS

Nannies and mannies play a crucial role in nurturing children’s growth. By mastering pedagogical skills and understanding developmental milestones, they can create engaging indoor and outdoor activities. These tailored experiences not only cater to each child’s abilities but also foster curiosity, creativity, and social skills, ensuring that every child thrives in a supportive and enriching environment.

Relevant qualifications for aspiring nannies include:

– CACHE (Council for Awards in Children’s Care and Education)
– NNEB (National Nursery Education Board)
– BTEC and NVQ (National Vocational Qualification)
– NAMCW (National Association of Midwifery and Child Welfare)
– ADCE (Associate Diploma in Childcare and Education)
